The Many Marriages of John Elford Gulley Research notes The Deceased Wife’s Sister’s Marriage Act 1907

William was an artist although it is not clear whether he made much of a living from this occupation.  At  the 1871 census he was living in Hurst Street, Birmingham. Four of the back-to-back properties in this street have been restored by the National Trust and are open to the public.

Painting by William H. Marshall of Sherwood Forest.

Ellen Marshall was born in Chester. For a short time the family lived in Wrexham and then moved to Shrewsbury where Ellen’s mother ran a commercial hotel, ‘Marshall’s Temperance Hotel’.  Ellen worked in the hotel with her mother, her sister, Carrie, and later her step-sister, Beatrice.
