New People - New Pages

Web site changes are happening thick and fast - well that’s what it feels like when I have to make all the updates to my genealogy database and then update the web site!  Of course I couldn’t do any of this without the wonderful contributions that I have had from all of you, particularly the new people who have made contact with me.  Many thanks to you all.

The new pages that have been added are -

The earliest Cowleys yet - family tree from Francis Cooly (pre 1756)

Family tree from Thomas Cowley (b abt 1796).

Family tree from Henry Cowley (b abt 1795)

A few pages of family tree ‘fragments’ where there is not sufficient information to make up a complete new family tree page.

All the names indexes have also been completely updated.

Google Maps

I have started to add links to Google maps to show where people originated.  At the moment these links are only on the marriage icons on the family tree pages but I hope to extend this to show birth places, and perhaps more, in due course.  Click on any underlined place name in a marriage icon to see a pop-up Google map.  Clicking on the blue marker in the map will give additional information for some locations.

The Missing Thomas Cowley

You may remember my story about the ‘missing’ Thomas Cowley in my last update.  In fact there were two different Thomas Cowleys referenced in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. The ‘Thomas’ in the 1851 census is the son of Francis (b abt 1806).  By 1861 he has moved out and his cousin, Thomas, son of Henry Cowley (b abt 1795), is working with his uncle in the Cowley bakery business.  You can see ‘Thomas the nephew’ in the family tree page from Henry Cowley (b abt 1795).   Thanks to contributions from other family members, I believe that I now also have the descendants of ‘Thomas the son’ and will be adding these to the web site in due course.

The Great Gulley Mystery - Solved?

John Elford Gulley was married three times.  The first and second marriages were to two sisters and the third to my paternal grandmother’s mother.  But the research suggests that when he married for the third time his second wife was still alive!  Did he commit bigamy?  Click here to see the family tree page, click on John Elford Gulley and follow the links.  It’s intriguing!

Who is in the Photo over the Fireplace?
This photograph was sent to me by a Cowley descendant in the United States of America.  It shows Frederick William Cowley and his wife Jessie (nee Britan) and was taken on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary on 9 September 1945.  (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

But the question is - who is in the portrait hanging above the fireplace?  If anyone knows, or can hazard a guess, please let me know.  There are no prizes - just the thanks of the gentleman in the USA and me.

And finally - please keep your memories coming.  Whilst I do get immense personal pleasure from maintaining this web site, it’s not just for me, it’s for all members of our extended family - whoever and wherever they may be.

I wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous
and healthy New Year.

Peter Cowley
