Brighton and Beyond
A History of the Cowley Family
Reproduced by kind permission of The Royal Pavilion and Museums, Brighton & Hove
The history of our family has fascinated me ever since my uncle, Roy Cowley, started researching our roots long before the days of powerful home computers and, of course, long before the days of the Internet. Roy's researches meant getting in the car, driving to a city or town, trawling through paper archives and even scraping the moss off faded tombstones.
Like all of us, I'm sure, I regret not asking questions of aunts, uncles, grandparents, and parents who are no longer with us. Had I done so then documenting the family history might just have been made that bit easier! Anyway, now we do have our powerful computers and we do have this amazing resource called the Internet, and we do have access to a wealth of family history data. And we can do it from the comfort of our own home while the wind howls outside and the rain beats against the windows!
So for the benefit of all those living Cowleys who share the same roots as me, and for the generations yet to come, I have created these web pages. I hope that you enjoy looking at our history and I hope that when I depart this mortal coil, one of you will take up the challenge and keep this archive alive.
