Born in Brighton, Sussex and emigrated to the USA in 1889. He owned a furniture and home decorating business in Detroit, Michigan. He served in the Spanish American War and on 20 May 1898 he was appointed Captain in Company M of 33rd Regiment of Michigan Volunteer Infantry.
